頭のなかに単語ごとに入ってくる英語を文章としてとらえて、意味をとらえるスピードが上がるといってもいいかもしれません。
込み入った内容の本を読んでいるときは、やっぱり「ん？」と引っかかってしまいます。じっくりと読めば理解できるんですけどね。
こういう本ばかりを読んでいると反射神経が衰えてしまって、音声で英語を聞いたときの理解のスピードが落ちるような気がします。
逆に、テンポ良く読める本を読んでいるときは、文章の意味がスラスラ分りますから、頭がそのスピードになれる。
そうすると、音声で聞いた英語を処理するスピードも上がるということです。
込み入った内容の英語を音声できいたときは、なかなか理解することは難しいです。ただ、これは英語でも日本語でも同じな気もします。
ということで、スラスラ読める本として、これまでに２作読んだ、J.A. KonrathのJack Danielsシリーズの第３作目"Rusty Nail"を読んでみました。
Konrathさんは「読者にストレスなく理解させることが重要だ」と考えている人で、しかもユーモアーを交えた文章なので楽しめます。
Konrathさんのサイトで掲載された紹介文を引用すると、内容はこんな感じです。

確かにその通りの内容です。面白かったです。英語理解のスピードへの影響も仮説通りな感じもします。
ただ、ちょっと犠牲者についてのグロい描写の頻度が高くて、ちょっとしんどい部分もある本です。
印象に残ったフレーズがあったので引用しておきます。Alexという登場人物と精神科医の会話です。
"That's an interesting question, Doctor. Can you ever truly know if love is being returned? You wear a wedding ring, so I assume you're married, and I assume you love your wife. But even if she says she loves you, you can't crawl around in her head and feel it for yourself. You can't ever truly know."
"I feel loved, and that's reassurance enough."
なんか、かっこいいよね。
あと、シリーズにレギュラーとして登場しているHarry McGladeという人物がいるのですが、エキセントリックさが京極夏彦の小説に出てくる榎木津礼二郎に似ていることに気づきました。まぁ、榎木津の方がメチャクチャですけど、このHarryもなかなかのものです。
